Other than marrying someone with the same financial outlook, it would have to be our current house. It has a self-contained ‘granny annex’ which we rent out which accelerated being able to pay off the mortgage earlier. However, I wouldn’t underestimate the first decision – finding your soul-mate and ensuring that you have the same values is the single most important thing in life. 

Talking to others who have been through divorce, with all the emotional and financial turmoil that follows, it can seriously damage your wealth. Every day I’m grateful for 20 years of a successful marriage, and look forward to another 20-plus years enjoying the fruits of our financial planning.
