It was during an MBR – or ‘Monthly Bath Review’ (a meeting/phrase borrowed from Amazon – the Monthly Business Review). Every month we sat in the bath on a Sunday evening with a glass of wine and discussed a spreadsheet of our finances (sorry, I know how nerdy that sounds…)
My wife did some rough maths, saying that our ISAs and pensions were worth X, the property worth Y and if we lived to 85… meant we’d have XYZ to spend every month until we died. In other words, we thought we could ‘retire early’. This prompted a detailed financial review, plus a couple more years working and we really did ‘retire at 50’.
